What you don’t know about surgical masks yet

Sanitise, Accessories

In recent months, surgical masks have become common objects that allow us to perform our daily activities safely.

What Surgical Masks Are For?

For those who don’t know it yet, surgical masks (also known as “hygienic masks” or “medical masks”) are devices that prevent the spread of pathogens such as bacteria and viruses that can often be dispersed in aerosols and respiratory droplets.

In general, surgical masks are used by medical personnel during medical interventions and while other medical operations are performed, surgical masks counteract the spread of nasal and oral diseases.

Surgical masks: main use

While in many Western countries (including Italy) surgical masks until recently were known only for use in the medical field, in several areas of East Asia these devices are used daily. They are mainly used in metropolises to prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses.

Other Benefits of Wearing a Surgical Mask

  • Direct contact with splashes and drops of substances dangerous to health can be avoided. Although it is not a device that fully protects, it can block direct contact with possible harmful substances. In these, the mask should be removed immediately after having been in contact with a contaminated environment, that is, as soon as one moves away from the affected area.
  • Reduces considerably the transmission of saliva and other respiratory secretions to others. It allows us to avoid contact with the nose and mouth. Thanks to the presence of the surgical mask, the wearer can effectively counteract the bad habit of often touching the nose and mouth.
