Nino Famà is unknown to most, but in the world of car racing, many remember him. Born in Sicily in 1956, he immigrated to Switzerland when he was very young, and as a result of his passion for risk and speed at the age of 18, he took up sidecar cross-racing, participating in several international races in Switzerland and Germany, demonstrating excellent racing skills.

In 1978 Nino was hired by an Italian chassis manufacturer for Ducati and Simonini, and he won three gold medals as Italian Champion in 1978, 1979 and 1980.

In 1982 Famà switched to motor racing with Formula Fiat-Abarth, winning nine consecutive races and the Italian Championship of the same formula.

In 1984, he switched to the higher category Formula 3, but despite his excellent results, he was forced to stop mid-season for lack of funds. However, he continued as Team Manager of his own stable, managing Formula 3, Formula 2000 and Formula 3000 for some clients.

At the same time, attracted by flying, like many pilots such as Niki Lauda, he soon obtained his helicopter pilot’s license.

Without any specific training, but only with his innate passion for mechanics, he designs an ultralight helicopter.

He builds his helicopter called KISS 209 obtaining excellent and flattering results and, based on his fiery and indomitable character, in 2009 he decides to found a company, the Famà Helicopters, for the small-scale construction of ultralight helicopters with technical performance well above the best competition in the world.

Here are some technical data of his ultralight KISS 209:

– Max speed: 210 km/h

– Cruising speed: 185 km/h

– Hourly operating cost: Euro 57.00 + fuel

– Transportable weight: 300 kg

– Starting/landing track area: approx. 30/40 sq.m.

All in all, it is cheaper than a big sports car.

“The components of a helicopter need to be assembled in a particularly clean and dust-free environment.”

So says Nino Famà, now CTO of the Italian-Chinese company DF AVIATION SRL.

Famà continues, “In my experience as a racing car driver and preparer, weight has always been the number one enemy, even more so in the world of aviation. With my carbon fiber helicopter, I have saved 30% of the weight of a normal ultralight. This way, my helicopters can carry the weight load of the helicopter itself (300 kg).”

His daughter Manuela, also involved in her father’s company as administrator, confides: “In our small company, each member of the company has to do several jobs, all of which are extremely useful and indispensable, such as cleaning the company, which I do with a simple and handy RCM sweeper. I particularly use it in the assembly department, where it is necessary to ensure maximum cleanliness to guarantee absolute safety in the air”.

It’s amazing that, in his work Famà is a stickler and a firm believer in ‘clean’, while in his private life he is still dedicated to practicing as a sidecar-cross driver, a difficult and reckless sporting discipline where mud and dust are the main elements that form the spectacular nature of the races, as well as the skill and reckless displays of the drivers.

It is even more outstanding that his daughter Manuela also practices sidecar-cross as a pilot with her friend Anastasia, the passenger, in the only Italian female crew that competes with excellent results, among dozens of male crews.
